A note from our Executive Director
It is snowing as I write this, but we’re thinking of summer! I’m excited about a Guild Gathering planned for Unity, New Hampshire this June. If you’re looking for a chance to connect with other Guild members, consider traveling to join us at Stone Fence Farm.
Another inspiring gathering just wrapped up here in Santa Fe: the annual Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition (RVCC) meeting. The Guild helped host nearly 100 inspiring partners from across the country to focus on the importance of rural economies and ecology. Len Lankford shares a more specific example of supporting forest dependent communities in Colorado. Also in this issue we pay tribute to a founding member of the Guild, Clint Trammel, who’s work continues to be a beacon for anyone trying to support economically and ecologically productive forests. Clint served on the Guild’s MPC and he would be happy to see their continuing efforts to serve members, craft policy, and engage students.
Don’t miss the other news in this issue: job openings, news from other Guild members, new research, upcoming events and more!
I hope all of you can enjoy the rest of winter and relish the coming signs of spring,
NEWS FROM THE FOREST
Clint Trammel inducted to Missouri Conservation Hall of Fame
Written by Al Sample. The Missouri Conservation Commission recently voted to induct Clint Trammel, a member of the Forest Stewards Guild founding board, into the Missouri Conservation Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place on April 25 at Clint’s beloved Pioneer Forest in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks. This is a recognition well earned, and an honor that will be a lasting
legacy to Clint’s contributions to the science and practice of
sustainable forestry.

A Guild Inspired Business Offers Opportunities
Written by Len Lankford. Transfer to new leadership is occurring each year, as many business owners near retirement. This includes privately-owned forest-based businesses inspired by the goals and values of the Forest Stewards Guild. It is critical to protect the spectrum of values that many small businesses offer to forests, and that these businesses continue and prosper. They require especially hard-working and motivated people. This article announces a leadership transfer opportunity with Greenleaf Forest and Wood Products in Colorado.

Rural Voices for Conservation
Written by Zander Evans. At the end of January, the Forest Stewards Guild helped host the Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition (RVCC) national meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Guild has long been a member of RVCC because it gives us a stronger voice in national policy and connects us with innovative organizations who share our vision for vibrant human and ecological communities.

Helping landowners learn from their peers about harvest options. Northwest Natural Resource Group (NNRG) and Oregon State University (OSU) are reaching out to forest owners for a voluntary study about timber harvesting methods to understand how they affect financial returns from the forest as well as its post-harvest condition. Learn more about the study and how to get involved.
Guild member Sarah Deumling shares her excitement after reading about ProSilva in January's ATL: "It was with great interest and pleasure that I just read about the Guild's connection to Pro Silva.... our Zena Forest has been managed under the Pro Silva "Naturgemaese Waldwirtschaft" (Close to Nature Forestry) principles since the former German owners' management. Their forest in Germany is listed as one of the three exemplary forests in that country (Crottorf - Schoenstein) and pro Silva was instrumental in their rethinking their forest management in the late 1980s. We continue to operate under these principles and look forward to whatever comes of the Guild's association with Pro Silva. Thanks for all the good work."
Congratulations to our friends and partners at Wallowa Resources in Enterprise, Oregon on the creation of a new community forest! Read the details and press release.
The Guild celebrates Women's History Month. In March, watch for features on our website and Facebook page that highlight women in forest stewardship. Also, be sure to catch the Spring 2019 Forest Steward issue, coming to member mailboxes in the second half of March, where we speak to the history, challenges, inspirations, contributions, and future of women forest stewards. March offers a collective time to reflect, though the Guild values diversity at all times and we are honored to have a growing diversity of individuals joining our cause toward ecological, economical, and socially responsible forestry!
